Whatcha drinkin’?

Society teaches women to choose daiquiris over whiskey. It is stereotyped that women drink “girly” fruity drinks, and men drink hard liquor and beer. It is because of this mindset that people are a little taken aback when a girl is out at a bar and orders Bourbon instead of an apple martini.

The stereotype is portrayed through the media. Advertisements for beer suggest that it is for manly men. Beer is seen as a masculine drink. Some wine cooler drinks have the calorie count printed on the front of the label. Girls are taught to be mindful of their bodies and watch their intake of calories.

Social norms and commercials have influenced our drink preferences. I have definitely noticed this at parties and social gatherings. The girls will typically drink a wine cooler or maybe a glass of wine, while the boys chug down beer and whiskey. I have also seen the boys chugging those beers refer to a boy who wants to drink a wine cooler as a “little bitch” because the fruity drinks are seen as girly. But even with the media influences and stereotypes, there still will always be that one girl who prefers a nice beer over something fruity.
